screw icarus

I’ve always been a Master of Sabotage,
but only if it applies to myself.
The reasoning goes,
if I’m just going to be Icarus,
fuck the fall and burn the wings,
not caring until later
that I never learned
to fly.

Today. Yesterday. Last week…
I’ve been biting my tongue,
sitting on my hands,
and staring at the Sun
with matches in my pocket
and wings at my feet.
And I can’t allow myself
to move.

Because this time,
I want to taste those clouds
as the wind takes me higher.
I want to feel the heat
as I climb to just the right spot.
And I know I might end up
in the dirt, the sea or worse,
but first, I want
to fly!

So forgive my silence,
my stasis
and my temporary fear,
but I’m waiting for that moment
I can trust myself
to pick up my wings
and put the matches
down.

A Halo- rainbow around my sins

For Robert Frede Kenter

A halo-rainbow surrounds my sins,
its glow almost motherly callous
and concerned as if she stands in
our longevous balcony and see
us playing soccer in the street
without watching us, and hence we
can be the truants from good behaviour,
moral language.

I blink. I cannot remember a rainbow
in my life let alone a halo around the sun.
I murmur, “Forgive me for leading
a monochrome life.” Cold breeze
feels for my pulses, touches my neck.
“Am I alive?” I desire to ask and decides not to.

The grass smells of a memory falling
from a great height, from the parapet of Eden.
The air thronged with the particles
reminds me of how the crows circle and scream
when one of them falls. Light has fallen.
It is sundown soon. I can call you Rob
and say, “Slainté Mhaith.” or hear
the sobbing water of a lake nearby.

WATCHING THE ASHES

sun dips
moon winks

overhead
stars align

here we are
spirit breaths,
sparks and smoke

placing
our hopes
on paper,
setting them
on fire

knowing
the promises
we keep are
greater than
the flames
testing us

T e n d r i l s

And disappearing
Into the sea
Go the things
We used to be
Long thin tendrils
Strewn over waves
Of time
Dancing
In the dying sun
Breathlessly
