Walking Away From Cancer

As long as this journey has been
There is a lot of inertia
Walking away from death
It is a slow process
It is a slow crawl
Patience has been worn
& it’s too fucking easy
Just to lay down in the recliner
In front of the tv & die there
Who would blame you if you did
This journey is hard
& requires the will to live

Michael D. Grover is a Florida born Poet/writer. He has been publishing his work for over twenty years. Michael has been published all over in print and on the internet. He spent over ten years as the head poetry editor at the online zine Red Fez. Over the years he’s published several chapbooks. In 2020 he published his newest novel Heavy Metal on Alien Buddha Press. His newest collection of Poems Fuck Cancer Poems Version 2.0 will soon be available. Michael currently resides in Fort Meade, Florida where he lives with cancer and writes haiku.

The Whisper

The four year old dying
From cancer
Nauseous, bald, sallow
Gazed up at her mother

And said, Mommy let’s be hopeful
Just for today, me and you
Please don’t cry
Let’s play a game

To which she added,
I will be okay. I can
Make a place for you
In heaven, and for daddy

We’ll be together again.
I’m just going first
To make it ready
For us

It came as a whisper
Without a tear
Except for the flood from her mother’s eyes
As the child expired with a smile.

This was written by el gallo sabio, a mochillero who spends his days in an underground marijuana club in Barcelona where he consumes copious amounts of Polar, a Venezuelan cerveza, to charge the creative ions in his bones.
