Give Up The Ghost

There’s that phrase “Give up the ghost” that’s been a part of our language for years on end. By “Give up the ghost,” it’s sometimes meant to stop fighting over little things. But more often it is used at the point of death. Seemingly to indicate the departure of a ghost or soul from the body. I think of this phrase often tonight when old ghosts haunt me around every bend. To what end, I do not know.

In late July, brother Will passed away from a heart attack in his sleep. This was the last featured writer submission I had him scheduled for. Bob The Belly

Lately, I’ve begun to call my belly Bob.
Wherever I go, along hallways, up and down staircases, huffing to the beat, Bob leads the way.
He’s been with me for years, Bob has.
So much so, that it’s hard to imagine life without him.
And when at last I should come to life’s end, Bob will poke the coffin lid open.
Screaming, “Nope, not yet!”
Needless to say, Bob didn’t come by this life of mine easily.
And won’t leave without a good, knockdown fight.
Hell, I earned this belly of mine.

Coming to Terms

I’m told in years past a group of elders in New Zealand built their own coffins to come to terms with their eventual deaths. Something about sawing, sanding, and nailing the coffins together soothed their minds. And when at last they were laid to rest their community gathered in wonder. Here were those that met the Reaper eye to eye and didn’t blink. Afterward, their families and friends walked away with plans to build coffins of their own.
