Shower Beer

There’s nothing
monumental here tonight
after another twelve-hour shift

my work clothes caked
with food and blood coil
like vipers on the bathroom floor

dinner sits flatlined
on the kitchen counter
next to a slew of notices and bills

and my wife attempting
to stay awake for me ends up
snoring on the couch again.

Something tells me
as I hold this lonely pilsner
like some sort of token

and let the cold water
from the showerhead
spray these aching bones

that maybe
I’m blending in
with these days

and even
this beer now
is starting to get warm.
