Leland Locke (Gonzo Freelance Writer)

Notes From The Night Desk
Brother Locke
Photo taken in an alley beside Bookmarks Bookstore,
Winston-Salem, North Carolina.

From the concrete-jungle swamps of Texas, the high Rocky Mountains of Montana, to living homeless on the cruel and crippled streets of Youngstown, Ohio, A, L. Locke has kept up writing in haunted notebooks, typed-up the words on pages fed into the mouths of typewriters, and exquisitely pecked electronic aphorisms and anagrams into various computers. As of this writing, A.L. Locke lives in a cabin in North Carolina’s Appalachian Mountains, writing down daily experiments of a “Common Man” living in contemporary America. He shares his life with his wife, Tara, and their 10 rambunctious dogs, two goats, too many chickens, and an aquarium full of freshwater fish. Creatures he views as important beings to understanding the Written Word. He has been published both in national and international publications, including Writer’s Digest, and various literary journals throughout the country. Notes from the Night Desk is a column he works on vigorously and tries to publish daily on WordPress.com. More volumes of published and previously unpublished work will appear in the future.

Mr. Locke incorporates the Gonzo way of Life into his everyday responsibilities and tomfoolery. Everything from shooting full paint cans of reds and black and white and greys, making them explode onto large canvases, buying out firework stands to stock up his personal office with colorful, glowing projectiles to be shot into the sky, collecting first edition books from the dead, and very-much-alive, voices from history, and adorning his home with typewriters, skulls and bones, pills, and weapons distract his responsibility putting down the word.

Brother Locke also has a new book for sale!! You can find it on the “Evil Entity” Amazon[dot-com]. I know people have their grievances with them, as do I, but they have helped me publish a ton of fantastic people over the years. I’m only saying that because you should most definitely buy this book. Cajun Mutt Press didn’t publish this one, but I did order a copy (pic below/review coming soon). It was an honor to meet him and his wife at Gonzofest. Insanely Beautiful Creatures.

You Can’t Blame Good Sex on A Puppy: Notes from the Night Desk, Volume 3

Synopsis

You Can’t Blame Good Sex on A Puppy: Notes from the Night Desk, Volume 3 brings us back to the world of author, A. L. Locke. With funny, sometimes tragic, autobiographical columns written in Mr. Locke’s simple prose that both entertains and provides the reader with a little knowledge.

In this third volume, the author wrestles with building a model to alleviate stress, creating a different form of frustration during the process. Visits to his favorite bookstore in Kent, OH., encouraging his mother to pursue her dream of writing and publishing her own books, saving a puppy from the dangers of living in a ditch, sharing with readers (for the first time) he is a father, and expressing his confusion at the absurdity of small-town banks are some of the few issues tackled in this collection.

Humor, a little kick of positivity, and, as always, some sardonic wit fills the pages of this Author’s continuous pursuit in being a Man that “Works the Word,” as he likes to call it.

Jonathan Shaw (Gonzo Tattooist & Author)

Jonathan Dowling Shaw (born July 4, 1953) is an American tattoo artist and writer. He founded New York City’s oldest tattoo shop, Fun City Tattoo, in 1976, before tattooing was legal in the city. He is another Living Legend!

Shaw was born in 1953. His father was big band musician and bandleader Artie Shaw, and his mother was the musicians’ seventh wife, actress Doris Dowling. He was raised in Los Angeles, and from his own description had a very rough upbringing. His parents’ marriage dissolved when he was three years old, and he developed a heroin addiction in his teenage years, occupying his time with varied acts of juvenile delinquency. At age 19, while working at the Los Angeles Free Press, he met the author Charles Bukowski who inspired him to hitchhike from Los Angeles to Rio de Janeiro in 1972. He arrived in South America, finding work as a deckhand and tattoo artist.
*info acquired from Wikipedia

*FULL DISCLAIMER* Jonathan Shaw DID NOT PAY ME FOR THIS AD. I listed him because he wrote an incredible blurb for Holding the Door for Barbarianas, by Mark Berriman! That, my friend, is worth infinitely more than a $50 AD. Thank You. Brother Berriman & I also scored some killer blurbs from Shane McGowan as well as Ohio Beat Poet Laureate John Burroughs! They can all be seen below, along with a link to the book.

“This addictive little book is aptly titled. Mark Berriman’s words open portals into realms where ghostly barbarian voices sing in an indomitable language of the heart. This is poetic expression at its finest. Courageous. Authentic. Vulnerable. Raw. And more fun than a crackhead wedding. Respek!”
—Jonathan Shaw (Author of Narcisa – Our Lady of Ashes, and Scab Vendor – Confessions of a Tattoo Artist)

“This is the most interesting poetry I have read in a long time and I RECOMMEND THAT YOU GO OUT AND BUY IT! From a drunken, drug taking lyric writer.”
—Shane MacGowan, Singer/Songwriter/Frontman of The Pogues

“Mark Berriman’s Holding the Door for Barbarians is a daring dance with the dickens that will both disturb and delight.”

Mark is currently at work on his first novel.

*EDITOR’S NOTE

Raissa & I met Brother Scorpio & HIS Beautiful Muse, Tricia, in 2018. Trish actually runs The Fox Poetry Box in St. Charles, Illinois! We met them back in 2018. Tricia even helped get two of my poems chosen to be put on Poem Posters for the St. Charles ArtsFest Poetry & Art Crawl! One in 2018, one in 2019. They hung them in local bars & coffee shops around the area. I even got to take the originals home. They’re signed, numbered, and framed in CMP Headquarters! It was pretty damn fantastic to be accepted into the Liberal Arts scene in St. Charles RIGHT after moving to Illinois. Thank Y’all.
