it is my ally
and my shield.
like all good friends
it does not take or ask of me
but stands by quietly
in the corner
and answers the call of duty.
even poets —
the most glorified species
on earth —
are selfish:
they draw their power
from misery
(theirs
or
that
of
others)
but this fellow
right here
sleeping in my closet
is an azure flute
that quells my worries
and sorrows
when its solid
neck rests
in my palm
i drink to infinity
and it’s as if
i’ve been granted
a thousand new lives.
