Jesus and How
He Must Have Felt

Staggering out Wee-Willy’s
dumpy dive bar, drooped eyes,
my feelings desensitizing,
confusing my avocado fart,
at 3:20 a.m., with last night
splash on of Brut aftershave.
Whispering to my outcast
self-sounding more like pending death.
My body detaching from myself,
numbed by winter’s fingers.
I crawl up these outside stairs
to my apartment after an all-night drunk,
cheap Tesco’s Windsor Castle
London Dry Gin—on the rocks.
I thought of Jesus
how He must have felt
during His resurrection
dragging His holy body
up that endless stairwell
spiraling toward heaven.

Another fight in the street, who’s winning?

I slip out the side door of the bar.
Into a slurry less than grand commotion.

Having arrived mid-punch.
Missing all the silly foreplay.

Another fight in the street, who’s winning?
A raft of loudmouths gathered round.
All sold on the loud cluck.

The veiny one on steroids getting the better
of his shorter, less veiny steroid friend.

The girls on the walk screeching for fresh blood.
With their phones out so that I have to push past.

Then a fight between a couple of the girls
breaks out.

They don’t call this the entertainment district
for nothing.

I Hear All This

Ya know? I hear all this
Bitchin’ and moanin’
About how life is just
So damn fucked up.
The wife done up and left.
You’re probably better off
Without the worthless hag.
‘Course, she’s probably a lot
Better off without your old
Cantankerous deadbeat ass.
And fuck that shit about
Bein’ so everlastin’ poor.
Didja ever have any
Real money anyway?
If you been in the system
Long enough, you know
That all jobs truly suck
In some way or ‘nother.
All your friends are just
Fair weather friends.
No one around when you’re
Down and out or need help.
Long as you can reach
The bottle when you’re layin’
There on the cold floor with
That broken hip or two,
You’re doin’ all right.
But, for sure, it is a bitch,
Stuck there unable to move
And your damn dog decides to
Gnaw off a big toe.
